Is Snowmobile Guiding Safe for Beginners?
Most guests who book with us have never ridden a snowmobile before. Here is what I have learned after guiding many tours through the forests of Höga Kusten – and what you actually need to get started safely.
My first time on a snowmobile
My first experience on a snowmobile was on a guided tour – together with my best friend, whose birthday I was celebrating with this gift. The weather was not perfect that day. But the feeling of riding through the landscape was simply incredible.
The snow-covered forests of northern Sweden rush past you. You feel the power of the machine, and at the same time there is this deep silence all around. An experience that is genuinely hard to put into words.
Today I guide guests through those same forests and across frozen lakes around Ramvik in Höga Kusten – a UNESCO World Heritage site in Ångermanland, northern Sweden. I know the reactions of first-timers well by now.
What makes guided tours so much safer?
Modern touring snowmobiles are far more stable and easier to handle than most people expect. Before the tour, everyone receives a thorough briefing: throttle, brake, reverse gear, emergency stop and the key basics. From there, you ride together as a group along marked, groomed trails.
That is the key difference: you do not simply head off on your own. Tricky sections are explained in advance. When needed, the whole group slows down or stops together. If someone gets stuck in soft snow – which can happen and is absolutely not a drama – the group helps right away.
Here in Höga Kusten it is not about extreme terrain. It is about experiencing the winter landscape for real – together, at your own pace.
Our routes lead through forests, across open fields and frozen lakes. The scenery is spectacular and the trails are well chosen. No extreme sport – just a genuine nature experience for anyone who is curious.
The right clothing makes all the difference
One thing many people underestimate: guests who get cold become tired and distracted, and enjoy the tour far less. Good, warm winter clothing matters more than most people think.
Luckily, every guest receives a freshly laundered thermal suit and helmet from us. What you should bring:
- Warm, waterproof winter boots
- Good winter gloves
- A warm hat
We take care of everything else. With the right gear, you can genuinely enjoy riding through a snow-covered forest – even when it is cold outside.
You do not have to ride solo
Anyone who feels unsure at first is welcome to ride along as a passenger. That is perfectly fine – and no sign of weakness.
This winter I had a guest who had absolutely no intention of driving himself. He rode as a passenger for the entire tour. By the end? Completely thrilled – and ready to grab the handlebars on the way back.
The tour works for anyone who is curious and up for a genuine winter experience.
Respect yes – fear no
Snowmobiling remains a motorised outdoor activity. The machines deserve respect. Overconfidence and risky behaviour can become dangerous quickly – and alcohol and snowmobiles simply do not belong together.
But with good guidance, on suitable trails and in a relaxed group, there is no reason why complete beginners cannot take part and have a wonderful time.
Up here in northern Sweden, it is not about speed. It is about experiencing the winter landscape, being out in it together – and having an adventure that most people will not forget any time soon.
What beginners usually want to know
No. A standard car driving licence (category B) is all you need. No licence? The passenger option is perfect for you.
Warm winter boots, good gloves and a hat are all you need to bring. We provide a thermal suit and helmet – freshly laundered and in the right size.
The tour is not a race. We ride as a group at a calm, relaxed pace. It is about the experience, not the speed.
No. Anyone who prefers to ride as a passenger is more than welcome. Many guests start that way and take the wheel themselves next time.
