7 Things to Do in Höga Kusten in Winter – My Personal Picks

Winter in Höga Kusten is unlike most other parts of Europe. The snow muffles every sound, everything grows quieter, and nature feels almost frozen in time. That is precisely what makes a winter stay here in northern Sweden so special. Instead of crowded tourist spots, you find stillness, snow-covered forests, and genuinely wild winter landscapes.

Snowmobile safari through the winter landscape

My number one – no question: a guided snowmobile tour. Around Höga Kusten, it gives you access to places and viewpoints that are almost impossible to reach in winter any other way.

What makes it special is not just the riding itself, but the whole experience: snow-covered forests, endless white landscapes, views over the Ångermanälven and the Höga Kusten Bridge – and of course a stop at an open fire with a hot coffee and a toasted sandwich in the traditional Mackjärn.

For me, it is the perfect mix of adventure, nature, and an authentic Norrland feeling.

Good news for first-timers: no prior experience or special skills are needed. A standard driving licence is enough. Anyone who prefers to ride as a passenger can absolutely do that. Small groups, personal guiding – no mass tourism.

Snowshoe hiking and nature walks

Not everyone is looking for action. Anyone who wants to experience the silence of a Nordic winter should try a guided snowshoe hike or nature walk.

Away from the roads, the stillness up here is extraordinary. Snow-laden trees, untouched snowfields, and almost no one else around. No mobile signal, no distractions – just the landscape and the soft crunch of snow underfoot.

A great option for this is Friluftsliv med Carina – guided nature tours in the region.

Wellness in warm water while snow falls outside

One of the finest winter feelings there is: minus ten degrees outside, light snow falling – and you are sitting in thirty-six degree warm water.

This, for me, is quintessential Scandinavian winter. The contrast between the cold outside and the warmth of the water is completely unbeatable.

Particularly beautiful for this is the Spa at Södra Berget in Sundsvall, with views over the city and the surrounding winter landscape. Bathrobe, slippers and fruit are all included – perfect for a relaxed day between two outdoor adventures.

Cross-country skiing and winter landscapes

Höga Kusten offers plenty of options in winter for cross-country skiing or smaller ski adventures in a genuinely impressive setting.

One especially beautiful spot is the viewpoint at Vårdkasen near Härnösand. From there you have a stunning view over the winter landscape – and on clear days far across the Ångermanälven.

Even a simple walk along a groomed snowmobile trail can be an experience on its own. You do not need to ski to find wonderful winter scenery along the way.

The Northern Lights and winter evenings on a frozen lake

When the weather cooperates, you can have extraordinary winter evenings up here.

Walking across a frozen lake under a clear sky has something almost magical about it. The complete silence, the stars above, the sound of ice beneath your feet. With a bit of luck, you might even catch the Northern Lights – slow green ribbons drifting across the sky.

For visitors from Germany or central Europe, this is often a memory that stays for a very long time. Northern Sweden offers real chances of seeing the aurora without the long journey all the way to Lapland.

Family time at Technichus in Härnösand

There are great options for families with children in winter too – especially on days when the weather does not cooperate.

Technichus in Härnösand is an interactive science and technology museum where children and adults alike get their money's worth. Experiments, building, hands-on exploration – fun for everyone and a perfect contrast to the outdoor activities.

A good combination: morning out in nature, afternoon at Technichus to warm up and explore.

Water park and relaxation at Paradiset in Örnsköldsvik

Travelling with children, or simply looking for a relaxed day? Visit Paradiset in Örnsköldsvik.

The leisure pool offers pools, slides and a wellness area – ideal after a cold day outdoors. A highlight for children, and a welcome rest for adults.

Örnsköldsvik is about one hour north of Ramvik and works well as a day trip.

Important tip for winter visitors

Days are significantly shorter in Höga Kusten in winter than in central Europe. It pays to start activities early and make the most of the daylight hours deliberately.

That is also part of what makes winter here so special. The stillness, the snow, and the dark evenings have a way of slowing you down – and truly letting you switch off.
